Resource Info
If your teen is glued to their phone, why not help them realise the positive aspects of their handheld digital devices? Studies show that mobiles and tablets can have a negative effect on teenagers’ mental health, as they frequently use messaging apps, social media and games. Using My Phone for Good helps young people to think about ways they can use their phone to improve their mental health – whether it’s by limiting their screen use or using meditation apps.
About this resource:
This activity prompts teenagers to explore six ways they can utilise their phones for positive mental health. This can be an especially beneficial resource if your child is experiencing mental health challenges as a result of their mobile or social media use.
Ways to use our phones for good mental health:
Mindful App Selection: The activity encourages teenagers to think about and identify apps that can support their mental well-being. This includes mindfulness apps, meditation guides, journaling tools, or educational resources that promote self-care and personal growth.
Utilising Built-in Tools: The activity prompts teenagers to consider the existing tools and features on their phones that can contribute to positive mental health. This may include setting reminders for self-care activities, using the phone's note-taking or organising apps, or utilising features like screen time monitoring and tracking their weekly screen use.
Time Management: By reflecting on the amount of time spent on screens, teenagers can explore ways to manage their phone usage more effectively. This may involve setting boundaries, implementing screen-free breaks, or engaging in activities that promote offline connection and well-being. This allows them to feel more in control of their own wellbeing and mental health.
Benefits:
Conscious Technology Use: The activity promotes awareness and intentionality in the use of phones and tablets. By encouraging teenagers to focus on positive mental health outcomes, it builds a more conscious approach to technology use and how this can be beneficial rather than harmful.
Mental Health Support: Identifying apps, tools, and strategies that support mental well-being empowers teenagers to leverage their phones as tools for self-care, relaxation, learning, and personal growth. These are apps and skills that they can use for life.
Balanced Digital Lifestyle: By considering both the positive and negative aspects of phone usage, teenagers can strive for a healthier balance in their digital lives. They can develop habits that prioritise their mental well-being while still enjoying the benefits of technology.
