Resource Info

Grief can be an extremely hard and sensitive topic to discuss, especially if you - the grown up - are grieving too. That’s why we have come up with our Grief Flashcards – a series of cards designed to educate and support children through the grieving process.

About our Grief Cards:

We have developed our Grief Cards to help you discuss the topic of grief and loss with children in your care. Check out our steps below on how to use our Grief Cards and how to talk to children about grief. We'll help you explain this process with our visual cues and prompts, as well as teach some breathing techniques for those moments when emotions become heightened.

Our printable Grief Cards consist of four sections, these are:

• Stage Cards - these cards help to explain the six stages of grief.
• Prompt Cards - these cards help to facilitate healthy discussion around grief and bring feelings to the surface.
• Breathing Cards - these cards help to calm and ground.
• Fact Cards - including our Feelings Card - these cards help to explain and normalise the process and emotions of grief.

Our Grief Cards are here to help children understand their emotions and discuss their grief.

Benefits:

• Educational – Our Grief Cards help your children understand the complex emotion of grief and the stages of grief, helping them feel informed and assured that their feelings and grief is normal.
• Supports healthy discussion – Using or Grief Cards shows that you are there to help your child through their grief by regularly discussing thoughts and emotions. Our prompts allow you to explore feelings and thoughts in a controlled way that helps your child to process and relieve feelings of anger, upset or distress.
• Tracks and monitors emotions – Explore and track emotions using our check in card and regularly share feelings.
• Develop coping skills – Our breathing cards help your children learn valuable, life-long coping skills and deep breathing techniques that can help during periods of distress or panic.

This resource is designed to support grieving children in various settings – whether you’re a parent, teacher or bereavement counsellor.
