Resource Info

This activity encourages children to differentiate between the things they can control and the things they cannot control. By focusing on the aspects within their control, children can feel focused, calm and in control.

Key Features:

This worksheet features a circle divided into two sections: inside the circle represents the things they can control, outside the circle represents the things they cannot control. It provides a visual framework for distinguishing between the two categories.

Identifying Control: The activity prompts children to write or draw the things they can control inside the circle. This can include actions, behaviours, or attitudes that are within their sphere of influence. By recognising what they can control, children can shift their attention towards areas where they have agency.

Letting Go of Control: The worksheet encourages children to write or draw the things they can’t control outside the circle. This serves as a reminder to accept and let go of factors beyond their control, helping to reduce anxiety and worry.

Benefits:

Focus and Clarity: By visually representing their circle of control, children can gain clarity on the aspects of your life that are within their power to influence. This helps them to direct their energy and resources towards meaningful actions and decisions, reducing feelings of helplessness or overwhelm.

Empowerment and Resilience: Recognising and focusing on the things we can control empowers us to take proactive steps towards positive change. It can be powerful to realise the choices we have and how this impacts our wellbeing.

Stress Reduction: Letting go of the things outside our control can be liberating and reduce stress. By accepting that some factors are beyond our influence, we can find a way to free ourselves from unnecessary worry and direct attention towards more productive and positive aspects of our lives.

My Circle of Control is a simple, yet powerful worksheet for children them helps them to understand the things in their lives they can influence and control. Children can lack a sense of control in their lives, with school, teachers, parents and caregivers all making daily decisions that affect them, this resource allows children to focus on their own positive aspects of control, leading to greater self-confidence and a greater sense of control.

Children can also use this resource to discuss with adults areas they can take back some control – perhaps it’s helping with meal plans at home, choosing their own clothes or having some power over their daily schedule – feeling a sense of control over our lives helps to boost our overall well-being and mental health.
