Masking and Unmasking Exploration Activity

Masking is when an individual hides their emotions, behaviours and reactions to the world around them to conform to societal expectations. Many neurodivergent teens mask to hide their true selves in fear of being judged or bullied, and whilst many say masking is an important coping mechanism, it has been shown to negatively affect mental health and wellbeing. In this exploration activity, we want to help teens who are tired of 'wearing a mask' learn to embrace their true selves. We would recommend using this resource in a professional setting.

Understanding Masking and Camouflaging in Teens

Many individuals, especially teens with autism 'mask,' which involves the intentional suppression or alteration of one's traits, behaviours and emotions to conform to societal expectations. As we delve into our Masking and Unmasking Exploration Activity, let's unravel the layers of masking - or 'camouflaging' as it's also known - and explore how unmasking can be helpful.

Understanding Masking

Some people who mask say that it is a very important coping mechanism, but in the same breath, masking has been shown to have a negative affect on mental health and wellbeing. Masking is the art of concealing one's authentic self, often to fit in or avoid judgment. For teens with autism, masking may manifest as an effort to camouflage their neurodivergent traits, adopting behaviours that align more closely with their peers. This coping mechanism is fuelled by the desire for social acceptance and can involve mimicking others, suppressing stimming behaviours, or adapting communication styles.

The Camouflaging Conundrum

Camouflaging takes masking to another level—it's not merely concealing but actively blending in. Teens may camouflage their neurodivergent traits to the point where these traits become virtually indistinguishable. While camouflaging can provide short-term social benefits, it can come at an emotional and mental cost. It requires immense energy, contributing to stress, anxiety, low self-esteem and a sense of disconnection from one's true self.

The Exploration Activity: Unmasking the True Self

This Masking and Unmasking Exploration Activity invites teens to embark on a journey of self-discovery. It encourages them to reflect on the strategies they employ to mask their traits and emotions and think of ways they can 'unmask' - if they wish to do so.

Creating the "True Self Mask": A Symbol of Acceptance

As the exploration unfolds, teens are invited to craft their "True Self Mask." Unlike traditional masks worn for concealment, this mask serves as a powerful symbol of self-acceptance. It celebrates their unique traits and becomes a visual reminder that their true selves are worthy and valuable.

We would recommend completing this activity in a professional setting.

Benefits of Unmasking

  • Emotional Communication - Unmasking helps neurodivergent teens to learn more about themselves, their emotions, traits and thoughts so that they are better able to understand and communicate their feelings and needs.
  • Healthy coping mechanisms - Unmasking can also help teens to explore healthy coping strategies as a result of learning more about and embracing their own needs and emotions.
  • Reduced Mental Strain - Unmasking can alleviate the mental strain associated with camouflaging, helping teens to build a healthier mental and emotional mindset.
  • Improved Confidence - This activity can help your teen accept their true self and their unique traits and abilities, leading to increased self-esteem and confidence.
