Belonging Boosters - Conversation Starters for Kids and Teens for Children's Mental Health Week 2026
Exploring belonging through feelings, situations, actions, community, and words.
About This Resource
Belonging Boosters is a carefully designed set of conversation starter cards that support meaningful discussion about belonging, inclusion, and emotional wellbeing. Created for use with children and teens, these cards help young people explore what belonging feels like, how it is experienced, and how it can be built and shared with others.
Belonging is a key part of mental health, yet sometimes you may not know how to initiate conversations that will get kids and teens talking. Belonging Boosters makes these conversations more accessible by breaking the concept down into clear, manageable prompts. The cards encourage children and young people to reflect on their own experiences, consider real-life situations, practise supportive actions, and develop the language needed to help themselves and others feel included.
The cards are suitable for a wide range of settings and can be used flexibly in pairs, small groups, or whole-class discussions. They work well during Children’s Mental Health Week, PSHE lessons, tutor time, circle time, or as part of ongoing wellbeing provision.
What the Belonging Boosters Cards Are
Belonging Boosters are conversation and action prompts that help young people:
-
Talk about feelings linked to belonging.
-
Explore real-life situations involving inclusion.
-
Practise positive actions and responses.
-
Reflect on community and shared responsibility.
-
Develop the words that help people feel welcome.
Together, the cards show that belonging is built through how we feel, what we notice, what we do, and what we say.
The Card Types & What They Mean
Feelings Cards:
Feelings Cards focus on emotional awareness and self-reflection. They help children and young people notice and name how belonging feels in their body and mind. These cards support empathy, emotional literacy, and understanding that feelings are an important part of belonging.
Scenario Cards
Scenario Cards present realistic, age-appropriate situations that young people may recognise from school, friendships, or social settings. These cards encourage perspective-taking and help learners think about how someone else might be feeling and what could help in that moment.
Action Cards
Action Cards invite children and teens to take immediate, physical actions. These may involve role-play, body language, movement, or simple actions that demonstrate inclusion and kindness. Action Cards help bring belonging to life and show that small actions can make a big difference.
Community Cards
Community Cards explore belonging beyond the individual. They encourage reflection on groups, schools, communities, and shared spaces, helping young people understand that belonging is something we build together and have responsibility for.
Say It Cards
Say It Cards focus on language and voice. They encourage children and teens to practise the words that help people feel included, supported, and safe. These cards build confidence in communication and show how words can strengthen belonging.
