FREE Unwind the Mind Activity Mat – World Mental Health Day 2026
A calming, interactive mental health activity mat packed with breathing, grounding, regulation, reflection and mindful activities for children.
Looking for a World Mental Health Day activity children will actually want to complete?
Unwind the Mind turns mental health and wellbeing into a huge, interactive activity mat filled with things to do, draw, colour, notice, try and explore.
Children can practise breathing exercises, use their senses to ground themselves, dump unwanted thoughts into the Brain Bin, doodle to calm, check in with their energy, explore what makes them feel good and even put different calming strategies to the test.
There’s no pressure to complete it in order, no lengthy writing and no single “right” way to use it.
Children can simply pick a section, give it a go and discover what works for them.
A Fun Way to Explore Mental Health
Mental health can feel like a big topic to introduce to children. Instead of only talking about ways to look after our minds, children get to try some of them for themselves.
They can experiment with slow breathing. Notice what they can see, hear, touch, smell and taste. Think about what is taking up space in their mind. Recognise their current energy level. Explore different calming strategies. Pause and focus their attention. Doodle, colour and play.
It creates lots of natural opportunities to talk about the idea that our minds need looking after too, and that different things work for different people.
So Much Packed Into One Mat!
Children can work their way around a huge variety of mini activities, including:
Pizza Breaths
Smell the pizza with a slow breath in, then gently blow on it to cool it down. A playful introduction to slow, controlled breathing.
Regulation Lab
Children become regulation scientists! They rate different calming strategies by shading the test tubes from 1–5 depending on how well each strategy works for them.
Brain Bin
Fill the dumpster with unwanted thoughts, worries or anything else taking up too much space in their mind.
Use Your Senses
A simple grounding exercise encouraging children to notice one thing they can see, hear, touch, smell and taste.
Happy Headspace
Fill the giant brain with the people, places, activities and little things that make their mind feel good.
Doodle to Calm
A large, open doodling space where there are no rules. Children can scribble, draw, pattern, shade or simply let their pencil wander.
Push the Pop It
A paper version of a familiar sensory favourite. Colour, press and work across the bubbles for a simple focusing activity.
Energy Check-In
How much energy do you have today? A quick visual way for children to stop and notice how they're feeling right now.
Slow Down!
A tiny pause amongst the activities to consider: What needs your attention today?
Smile File
A quick prompt to capture something that has made them smile.
Find & Count
Hidden brains scattered around the mat add an extra searching challenge.
Find & Label the Emotions
Children can spot the different emotional expressions hidden around the page and identify what they might be feeling.
Plus more little prompts, activities and surprises to discover as they make their way around the mat.
It's Great for Starting Conversations Too!
Although the mat feels light and playful, it provides lots of natural openings for useful conversations:
- What helps your mind slow down?
- How do you know when you need a break?
- Do the same calming strategies work for everybody?
- What takes up space in our minds?
- What makes your mind feel good?
- What does your body feel like when you have lots of energy?
- Why might focusing on our senses help us feel more grounded?
That makes it useful for teachers, ELSAs, therapists, counsellors and pastoral staff who want to explore mental health in an age-appropriate way.
Perfect for World Mental Health Day 2026
World Mental Health Day takes place on 10 October each year, creating an opportunity for schools and settings to open up conversations about mental health and explore practical ways we can look after our minds.
Unwind the Mind is ideal if you want an activity that is easy to introduce, requires very little preparation and gives children plenty to actually do.
Use it as your main World Mental Health Day activity, alongside a presentation or lesson, as a calm follow-up activity or as part of a wider wellbeing day.

And because everything is wrapped up in doodles, experiments, pizza, Pop Its, hidden pictures and mini challenges, it doesn't feel like they're sitting down to complete a mental health questionnaire.
