My Memory Box is an activity designed to help young children process and explore grief and loss.
Directions: When someone dies, a memory box can help us to remember them. Ask you child to fill their memory box with all their favourite memories of the person they miss. Why not add some of their person’s favourite things too?
We know that grief can be an uncomfortable subject to talk about, but it's important that we help our children deal with complicated feelings such as grief with discussions and acknowledgement. This activity helps your child to reflect on their loss, thinking about what they would put in a memory box if they could. These can be actual memories, or objects and items that remind them of their loved one.
Benefits:
• Promote Open Discussions: My Memory Box provides a safe and structured activity to facilitate discussions about grief with children. By engaging in this activity, children can explore their feelings of loss and reflect on their memories and the significance of items associated with their grief.
• Acknowledging Feelings: This activity encourages children to acknowledge and express their complicated feelings surrounding grief. By considering what they would include in a memory box, children can process their emotions and begin to understand the impact of their loss on their lives.
My Memory Box is a valuable resource for parents, professionals, and teachers who want to support young children in navigating the complexities of grief. By engaging in this activity, children can find a means of expression, gain a sense of closure, and begin their healing journey.
