A fun activity that encourages children to explore differences and how other’s feel.
Directions: Empathy means being aware of how others are feeling and what they may be thinking. We can feel empathy by imagining ourselves in someone else's shoes. On one shoe, have your child write down three things that make them happy and three things that make them sad. Then, have them choose someone they know – for example, a sibling, friend or parent - and do the same for the other shoe. What do they notice or learn? Can they imagine themselves in that person’s shoes?
You could also use this in a classroom or group setting by having your children ‘swap’ their shoes with their peers and explore what makes others in their group feel happy or sad.
