Resource Info

Hypothetical concerns and negative thoughts can often hold a strong grip on children's minds. By using the Belief O'Meter, children can assess how much they believe these thoughts to be true and gain a fresh perspective.

Directions: Have your child write their thoughts in our thought bubbles, then for each thought, draw an arrow on the Belief-O-Meter to show how much they really believe it. Writing down thoughts in thought bubbles and placing them on the Belief O'Meter allows children to visually examine their beliefs and question the validity of their thoughts.

About this resource:

The Belief O'Meter is a thought exploration activity designed to help children challenge and evaluate their worries and critical thoughts.

• Challenge unhelpful thoughts: The Belief O'Meter enables children to challenge unhelpful thoughts and worries by assessing how much they believe those thoughts to be true. It encourages critical thinking and empowers children to explore the accuracy – or inaccuracy – of their thoughts.
• Explore the validity of thoughts: This resource prompts a great discussion about worries and fears and how our brain sometimes tells us things about ourselves that aren’t true.
• Release fears and worries: By engaging in this activity, children can release their worries and anxieties by acknowledging that not all thoughts hold true. It helps them understand that thoughts can be subjective and may not reflect reality.

The Belief O'Meter generates discussions around thoughts and self-beliefs making it the perfect addition to counselling sessions and an interactive part of a psychologist’s toolkit. Im fact, parents, professionals, and teachers can all engage in conversations with children to explore their thoughts further with this resource, providing support and offering guidance.

Benefits:
• Thought Evaluation: The Belief O'Meter encourages children to critically evaluate their thoughts, separating helpful and accurate thoughts from unhelpful or distorted ones.
• Release Negative Thinking: By visually representing thoughts and beliefs, children can gain a new perspective and reduce the power of negative thinking patterns.
• Empowerment and Self-Reflection: Engaging in this activity empowers children to take an active role in managing their thoughts and beliefs. It promotes self-reflection and enhances their emotional well-being.
• Open Communication: The Belief O'Meter stimulates open discussions between children and professionals and caregivers, fostering a supportive environment where children feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns.
